However, the supplier will need enough information to understand dimensions, target market, materials, function, style, quantity, packaging and delivery expectations. During development, these ideas must be converted into approved drawings and specifications. More complete starting information normally reduces revisions and makes sampling faster.

Who owns the design developed during an OEM or ODM project?

Ownership should be agreed before development begins. Buyer-supplied artwork normally remains the buyer’s property, while supplier-owned shapes, construction methods or existing designs may have different usage terms. Custom tooling, modified artwork and jointly developed features should be covered in written commercial agreements. Can a supplier sign an NDA before reviewing a confidential concept?
